Sun Sep 15 17:05:33 UTC 2024: ## McIlroy’s Irish Open Dream Crushed by Højgaard’s Late Surge
Rory McIlroy, who entered the final round of the Irish Open with a one-shot lead, saw his hopes of a national victory dashed by a late surge from Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard. Despite a strong performance, McIlroy made critical mistakes down the stretch, allowing Højgaard to snatch the title with a final round of 6-under 65.
McIlroy held a comfortable lead through much of the round, but a crucial missed approach shot on the 15th hole opened the door for Højgaard. The Dane, who had made a miraculous chip-in earlier in the day, capitalized on McIlroy’s misfortune with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to tie the score.
Højgaard then sealed his victory with a birdie on the final hole, leaving McIlroy with a 10-foot eagle putt to force a playoff. Unfortunately, the putt stayed just a sliver high, leaving McIlroy and the enthusiastic Irish crowd in heartbreak.
“It’s unfortunate I’m getting used to these near-misses this year,” McIlroy stated after the round. “Hopefully, the tide is going to turn soon, and I can turn all these close calls into victories.”
The loss marks yet another near-miss for McIlroy, who has been plagued by heartbreaking defeats throughout 2024. This latest disappointment comes just three months after a similar experience at the U.S. Open, where he missed two par putts inside of five feet, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to claim the title by a single stroke.
Despite the disappointment, McIlroy’s ability to bounce back and make a valiant effort in the final round of the Irish Open is a testament to his resilience. With the Open Championship just around the corner, McIlroy will be looking to turn the tide and finally secure a victory.
