Mon Sep 16 15:44:49 UTC 2024: ## Second Apparent Assassination Attempt on Trump Sparks Calls for Increased Security

**West Palm Beach, FL** – Following a second apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in two months, calls for increased security for the Republican presidential candidate are mounting. The incident occurred on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, when a suspect, identified as Ryan Routh, was found waiting near the course with a scoped rifle.

Routh, a convicted felon, was arrested after a Secret Service agent spotted the rifle’s muzzle protruding from bushes near the sixth hole. He had been waiting for over 12 hours and was within 300-500 yards of Trump, although authorities confirmed he never had a direct line of sight.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the level of protection afforded to former presidents, particularly those running for office. While Trump was unharmed, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach County highlighted the difference in security protocols between a sitting president and a former president. “If he was [a sitting president], we would have had this entire golf course surrounded,” he said.

Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe acknowledged that Trump’s golf outing was unplanned and agents had received short notice. He emphasized that despite the short notice, the security plan implemented was successful.

Congress is now considering legislation to provide presidential candidates with the same level of protection as the sitting president. Senator Tom Tillis (R-NC) has announced his intention to introduce such legislation. Several members of both parties have voiced their support, echoing concerns that two assassination attempts within 60 days are unacceptable.

The bipartisan congressional task force investigating the first assassination attempt in July has requested an additional briefing from the Secret Service following Sunday’s incident. Former Secret Service agents have also suggested that Trump’s security needs to be reevaluated, particularly given his active campaign for the presidency.

The White House has expressed relief that Trump was unharmed and has reaffirmed its commitment to providing the Secret Service with the necessary resources to ensure the former president’s safety.

The investigation into Routh’s actions is ongoing.
