Tue Sep 17 12:53:16 UTC 2024: ## New Covid Variant XEC Spreads Globally, Fears of Dominant Strain Rise
A new Covid-19 variant, dubbed XEC, is rapidly spreading across the globe, raising concerns about its potential to become the dominant strain. First detected in Germany in June, XEC has been reported in at least 15 countries, including the UK, US, Denmark, and several European nations.
According to data from Scripps Research’s Outbreak.info, XEC has been identified in 12 US states, with higher prevalence in Europe. Denmark and Germany are witnessing particularly “strong growth” of the variant, with Slovenia reporting over 10% of samples containing XEC in August.
While XEC presents symptoms similar to other Covid variants, including tiredness, headaches, sore throat, and high temperatures, researchers are calling for closer monitoring to better understand its specific characteristics.
Prof Francois Balloux, Director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, emphasizes that XEC is more contagious but vaccines are still expected to offer good protection as it belongs to the Omicron family. The possibility of XEC becoming the dominant subvariant over the winter remains a concern.
Although the UK’s latest Covid data shows a 4.3% rise in cases week-on-week, with 1,465 hospital admissions until August 30, the data doesn’t differentiate between strains. The NHS continues to offer free booster shots for those at higher risk of severe illness.
Experts, including Scripps Research Translational Institute Director Eric Topol, believe XEC is the most likely variant to “get legs next,” highlighting the importance of continued surveillance and public health measures.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) emphasizes the natural tendency of viruses to mutate and change, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness.
