Sun Sep 15 17:14:26 UTC 2024: ## Indian Director Accuses Netflix of Plagiarism in ‘Squid Game’

Indian director Soham Shah has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that their hit series “Squid Game” is a rip-off of his 2009 film “Luck.” Shah alleges that the Korean series, which became the most watched show on Netflix in 2021, is a direct plagiarism of his film, which featured Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, and Sanjay Dutt.

The lawsuit, obtained by American media outlet TMZ, states that both “Luck” and “Squid Game” revolve around contestants competing in dangerous challenges with a large cash prize as the reward. In Shah’s film, participants discover that losing a challenge results in death, while the death of other contestants increases the winnings for those who remain.

Shah claims he began writing the story of “Luck” in 2006, and the film was released in July 2009. However, “Squid Game” creator and writer Hwang Dong Hyuk has stated in interviews that he conceived the idea for the series in 2008.

Netflix has vehemently denied the allegations, stating that the lawsuit “has no merit.” A spokesperson for the streaming giant asserted that “Squid Game” was entirely created and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and that they will defend the matter vigorously.

The lawsuit comes months ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of “Squid Game” season two, scheduled for December 26th. This development has sparked a debate about originality in storytelling and the potential for accidental similarities between separate creative projects.
