Sun Sep 15 16:42:25 UTC 2024: ## Limerick Mayor Raises Concerns Over Asylum Seeker Accommodation Plans, Demands Consultation
Limerick’s directly elected Mayor, John Moran, has expressed serious concerns about the government’s plans to establish asylum seeker accommodation centers in the city. In a series of letters to Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman, Mayor Moran invoked his legal right to be consulted on ministerial policies impacting Limerick, citing Section 35 of the legislation governing his office.
Mayor Moran specifically highlighted the proposed accommodation center at River House on Charlotte’s Quay, noting the public’s “upset and disappointment” over the lack of consultation surrounding the plan. He argued that this lack of dialogue could lead to social instability and urged immediate engagement with the local community.
The Mayor also requested a meeting with Minister O’Gorman to discuss the broader government strategy for housing international protection applicants. He believes that the “constrained local services” in Limerick require additional supports and that there may be better alternatives for accommodating asylum seekers.
The Department of Integration confirmed that Minister O’Gorman and Mayor Moran have met to discuss the matter. The department stated that they are working diligently to source and provide accommodation for international protection applicants across Ireland, fulfilling both their legal obligation and humanitarian duty to those fleeing war and persecution. They acknowledged the shortage of suitable accommodation and emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing a comprehensive strategy to address the issue.
The department confirmed that two sites in Limerick are currently being prepared for use: a facility in Ballysimon and the Charlotte’s Quay location, which is under review.
The situation in Limerick underscores the complex challenges faced by local communities and the government in navigating the increasing need for accommodation for international protection applicants. The Mayor’s demand for greater consultation emphasizes the need for transparency and community engagement in addressing these sensitive issues.
