Sun Sep 15 17:05:50 UTC 2024: ## Italian Deputy Prime Minister Faces Six-Year Jail Term for Migrant Boat Blockade

**Rome, Italy** – Italian prosecutors are seeking a six-year jail term for Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, accused of kidnapping and dereliction of duty for his decision to prevent a migrant rescue ship from docking in 2019.

Salvini, who was then the Interior Minister, blocked the Open Arms charity ship, carrying 147 rescued migrants, from entering the Italian port of Lampedusa for nearly three weeks. He defended his actions, arguing that he was preventing Italy from becoming a “refugee camp for all of Europe”.

The prosecution argues that Salvini’s actions violated the migrants’ human rights, citing deteriorating conditions and a scabies outbreak on the ship. Prosecutor Geri Ferrara emphasized the principle of human rights prevailing over state sovereignty in a democracy.

Salvini, the leader of the anti-immigration League party, maintains his innocence and claims that his actions reduced migrant crossings and deaths in the Mediterranean. He has vowed to continue fighting the charges, highlighting the decrease in migrant arrivals during his tenure.

The trial, which began in October 2021, is expected to reach a verdict next month. If convicted, Salvini could be barred from holding public office.

The case has sparked intense political debate, with Salvini’s coalition partner, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, expressing solidarity and condemning the prosecution as a “serious precedent”. Meloni, who has also implemented strict border controls, has seen a significant drop in migrant arrivals since taking office.

Meanwhile, other European countries are grappling with similar challenges. The UK is facing record levels of migrant crossings in small boats, leading Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to pledge action against smuggling gangs.
