Sun Sep 15 17:12:55 UTC 2024: ## England’s Euro 2028 Participation and Premier League Clubs’ European Involvement NOT at Risk Despite UEFA Concerns

**London, UK** – Despite a warning letter from UEFA to the UK government expressing concerns about the proposed independent football regulator, sources from both UEFA and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have assured that England’s participation in Euro 2028 and Premier League clubs’ participation in European competitions will not be jeopardized.

UEFA’s general secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, in a letter to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, expressed concerns over potential “scope creep” of the regulator’s powers, fearing it could undermine existing football structures and amount to government interference. The letter stated that while UEFA is “encouraged by the intent of the original fan-led review,” it believes the regulatory area should ultimately be returned to the Football Association (FA).

While UEFA acknowledged the potential sanction of excluding England from Euro 2028 or Premier League clubs from European competition, sources have stressed that this is a last resort and extremely unlikely.

The DCMS has also downplayed the concerns, emphasizing the bill’s aim to establish an independent regulator that “will put fans back at the heart of the game” and address fundamental governance issues to ensure English football’s sustainability.

Campaign group Fair Game, a long-time advocate for football governance reform, dismissed UEFA’s concerns as a “scare story,” highlighting the dire financial state of English clubs and the urgent need for reform.

The Football Supporters’ Association echoed this sentiment, stating that “there’s no risk to England’s participation in tournaments” and that the regulator will be “fully independent of the government.”

This news comes as a relief to English football fans, ensuring the future of the national team and Premier League clubs in international competitions remains secure. The government is expected to respond to UEFA’s letter shortly, continuing the dialogue towards establishing a robust and independent football regulator.
