Mon Sep 16 15:32:26 UTC 2024: ## Pope Francis Concludes Southeast Asian Tour with Emphasis on Interfaith Harmony and Dialogue in Singapore

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Pope Francis concluded his two-week tour of Southeast Asia with a 48-hour visit to Singapore, showcasing his ability to draw large crowds and his commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and inclusivity in the region.

The Pope celebrated Mass in honor of Mary at the Singapore Sports Hub National Stadium, attracting 50,000 attendees, a remarkable feat for a country with only 6.7% of its population identifying as Catholic.

Francis’ visit also underscored his continued efforts to build relationships with Asian countries, particularly China. While official diplomatic relations between the Vatican and China remain complex, the Pope appointed the first resident papal representative to Vietnam in December 2023, paving the way for potential official recognition.

In Singapore, Francis emphasized the importance of interfaith harmony and dialogue, highlighting the country’s diverse religious landscape. During an interreligious meeting with young people, he stated that “all religions are a journey leading to God,” and encouraged greater understanding and collaboration across faiths.

The Pope also addressed the challenges of rapid economic growth and social inequalities in Singapore, urging leaders to prioritize the needs of the poor, elderly, and migrant workers.

While the trip was highly scrutinized by Chinese authorities, Francis was allowed to stream his speeches and events live on social media, demonstrating a degree of openness from Beijing.

Despite his advanced age, Francis displayed resilience throughout the tour, meeting with disabled people and children at every stop. He emphasized the need for acceptance and respect for all, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

The Pope’s visit to Singapore concluded his extensive Southeast Asian journey, demonstrating his commitment to building bridges across cultures and faiths, and advocating for a more inclusive and just world.
