Sun Sep 15 17:03:37 UTC 2024: ## “Imported Wives” Explores the Dark Side of “Japa” Syndrome in New Nigerian Film

**LAGOS, NIGERIA** – Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker Pascal Atuma is set to release his latest film, “Imported Wives,” which tackles the often-unseen consequences of the “Japa” syndrome on relationships. “Japa,” a Yoruba word meaning “to flee,” has become synonymous with the exodus of Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad, particularly in Western countries.

“Imported Wives” dives into the challenges faced by African men who return to their home continent to find wives and bring them to their new lives overseas. The film, starring Omoni Oboli, Nancy Isime, Patience Uzokwo, Joseph Benjamin, Linda Osifo, and Ngozi Nwosu, tells the story of a man who, upon returning to Canada with his new wife, sees her turn against him after being influenced by a group of Nigerian women who have already experienced the cultural shift.

Atuma, who serves as the film’s producer, highlights the alarming rate of divorce among African couples in Western countries, attributing it to a complex mix of cultural clashes and the pressure to adapt to a new environment. He emphasizes that the film is intended to be an eye-opening portrayal of the “marital abnormality” faced by African families abroad, urging viewers to understand the often devastating impact of “Japa” on relationships.

Lolu Desalu, executive director of Nile Entertainment Group, the film’s distributor, stresses the importance of “Imported Wives” in sparking conversations and educating viewers about the potential consequences of marriage based solely on circumstance rather than love.

“Imported Wives” was filmed in both Nigeria and Canada and took a year and eight months to complete, primarily due to visa challenges faced by the cast. Atuma advocates for stronger support from film industry associations in facilitating the process for actors seeking to work internationally.

While a release date has yet to be confirmed, “Imported Wives” is set to premiere in cinemas in 2024. Nile Media Entertainment Group, led by Moses Babatope, will handle the film’s distribution.
