**Cape Canaveral, FL** – Four private astronauts have returned to Earth after completing a five-day mission aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, marking a significant milestone in the commercial space industry. The Polaris Dawn mission, spearheaded by billionaire Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4, concluded on Sunday with the crew’s safe landing off the coast of Florida.
The mission’s highlight was the first-ever spacewalk conducted by astronauts representing a private company rather than a government space agency. On Thursday, mission commander Jared Isaacman and SpaceX senior operations engineer Sarah Gillis ventured outside the spacecraft, testing SpaceX’s spacesuit technology and gathering valuable data for future spacewalk operations.
“It is critical for the commercial industry to have the tools and experience for spacewalk operations,” Isaacman said in a social media post. “We learned a lot about the technical disciplines related to EVA operations.”
The mission also achieved a record-breaking altitude of 870 miles, pushing the boundaries of human space travel and allowing for the collection of valuable data on radiation exposure and micrometeoroid debris.
The Polaris Dawn crew, comprised of Isaacman, Gillis, former fighter pilot Scott Poteet, and lead space operations engineer Anna Menon, also tested laser communications with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite broadband provider, to explore potential applications for future missions to Mars.
The mission, a follow-up to the 2021 Inspiration4 mission, further demonstrates the growing role of the private sector in space exploration and innovation.
“SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn Falcon 9 rocket on the launchpad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 5:23 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 10, following two weeks of postponements.”
The success of the Polaris Dawn mission lays the groundwork for future private space endeavors, with two more missions planned using SpaceX’s Starship rocket.
