**Washington D.C.** – The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a public service announcement warning American voters about misinformation campaigns designed to undermine their trust in the upcoming election.
While hackers are attempting to spread false information about election infrastructure being compromised, the agencies emphasize that these claims are unfounded. While voter registration data, which can be purchased legally, is being used to bolster these claims, it has never impacted the voting process or election results.
The agencies assure voters that no hacking attacks have ever prevented elections, changed voter registration information, hindered voting, compromised ballot integrity, or interfered with ballot counting. Despite these assurances, citizens are urged to be skeptical of online information, particularly from unknown sources.
This warning comes amidst recent efforts to influence the election. Earlier this month, authorities seized 32 websites and charged two individuals with conspiracy in a scheme orchestrated by Russia, aiming to return former President Donald Trump to office. Google also confirmed a cyberattack by Iranian state-sponsored actors attempting to access emails linked to President Joe Biden and former President Trump.
Furthermore, reports suggest Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered “Operation Lakhta” to interfere in the 2016 US election and support Trump over Hillary Clinton. The FBI and CISA are committed to ensuring a safe and secure election, and urge citizens to be vigilant against misinformation.
