Sun Sep 15 17:33:08 UTC 2024: ## Jewish Chronicle Faces Backlash, Columnists Quit Amid Fabricated Articles Scandal

**London, UK -** The Jewish Chronicle (JC), a prominent Jewish newspaper, is facing a growing crisis following the resignation of three prominent columnists in protest of the publication of allegedly fabricated articles.

Jonathan Freedland, Hadley Freeman, and David Aaronovitch all announced their departures, citing the publication of articles by freelance journalist Elon Perry as a “great disgrace.” The JC has since acknowledged that it conducted an investigation into Perry and removed his articles after finding some of his claims to be unsatisfactory.

The controversy centers on an article written by Perry claiming to have obtained a document demonstrating Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s plan to smuggle himself and Israeli hostages to Iran via the Philadelphi Corridor. This story, echoing talking points used by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was later contradicted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), who stated they had no knowledge of such a document.

Freedland, who has written for the JC since 1998, criticized the paper’s lack of accountability, stating it “reads like a partisan, ideological instrument.” He also expressed concern about the ownership of the JC, which is shrouded in secrecy following its purchase by a consortium led by Sir Robbie Gibb in 2020.

In response, JC editor Jake Wallis Simons acknowledged the mistakes made and vowed to implement stronger internal procedures to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Elon Perry, however, defended his reporting, claiming he could not reveal his sources and accusing the JC of a “witch-hunt” motivated by jealousy.

The resignations of the three columnists, along with the controversy surrounding Perry’s articles, have cast a shadow over the Jewish Chronicle’s reputation. It remains to be seen how the paper will respond to this crisis and restore public trust.
