Norwich, Norfolk – Rosie, a beloved tortoise-shell cat and potential record holder for the world’s oldest cat, passed away this week at the age of 33. Her owner, Lila Brissett, 73, was by her side as Rosie peacefully passed away in the hallway of their home.
Rosie, born in 1991, was considered the unofficial holder of the “world’s oldest cat” title as the current record belongs to a 28-year-old cat named Flossie from Kent. Rosie, who turned 33 on June 1st, lived to be the equivalent of 152 years old in human years.
Brissett, who adopted Rosie as a kitten, shared her grief, saying, “I miss her so much. She wasn’t very well, and one day she just walked into the hallway, laid down, and passed away. There were lots of good memories though, and I’m happy we had our time together.”
Rosie was known for her love of eating and sleeping, often found napping in the window of Brissett’s home. She had been an indoor cat in her later years.
Brissett had previously rescued an abused cat and a stray dog and welcomed Rosie into her home after a cat rescue contacted her in the 90s when Rosie needed a new home due to her first family’s daughter’s allergies.
Last year, a spokeswoman from Guinness World Records encouraged Brissett to submit an application for Rosie’s record but she never got around to it.
While Rosie may not have officially held the world record, she remains a testament to the long and fulfilling lives cats can lead. Her story and her memory will live on in the hearts of her loving owner and all who knew her.
