**TORONTO, CANADA** – The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has come to a close, with Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck” taking home the prestigious People’s Choice Award. The film, starring Tom Hiddleston, has already garnered early buzz as a potential awards contender following its premiere at TIFF.
The People’s Choice Award, often seen as a bellwether for Oscar success, has a strong track record. 12 out of the last 14 winners received Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, with four going on to win the coveted prize.
“The Life of Chuck” beat out Jacques Audiard’s musical crime comedy “Emilia Pérez” for the top spot. “Emilia Pérez,” which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and Best Actress for its three leading ladies (Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez), was awarded the first runner-up prize at TIFF.
Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora” received the second runner-up award, marking the second film to be recognized at both Cannes and TIFF.
Other notable premieres at TIFF included Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller “Babygirl,” starring Nicole Kidman, which garnered much attention after its North American premiere; Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here,” a potential Brazilian Oscar entry; and Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” featuring a career-defining performance from Pamela Anderson.
The festival also celebrated a number of Canadian films, with “Shepherds” winning the award for Best Canadian Feature Film, and “Are You Scared to Be Yourself Because You Think That You Might Fail?” receiving the award for Best Canadian Short.
