Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced his resignation, sparking intense speculation about his replacement. While Kejriwal has confirmed that a fellow AAP member will take over until the next elections in February 2025, the potential candidates are numerous and include prominent AAP leaders like Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain.
The possibility of Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, taking the helm has also been floated, and some leaders have indicated that a Dalit leader might be chosen.
Kejriwal has explicitly ruled out his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, becoming his successor, stating that Sisodia will focus on campaigning alongside him. Sisodia himself has announced he will not accept any official position until he receives a “clean chit” from the public.
Atishi stands out among the potential successors due to her handling of key portfolios such as education, finance, revenue, and law. While she was nominated by Kejriwal to hoist the national flag on Independence Day, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor instead appointed Gahlot.
Kejriwal’s resignation comes after a period of significant political activity in Delhi, with the last assembly elections held in February 2020, resulting in a landslide victory for the AAP with 62 seats.
As the 2025 elections approach, the Election Commission has initiated a special summary revision of the electoral roll, scheduled to conclude in early January 2025. This will be followed by the final publication of the electoral rolls on January 6, 2025.
The upcoming months will see intense political maneuvering in Delhi as the race to replace Kejriwal and claim the Chief Minister’s chair heats up.
