**Washington, D.C.** – The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025 in October, with current estimates pointing to a 2.5% increase. This follows a substantial 8.7% increase in 2023 and a more moderate 3.2% adjustment in 2024.
The annual COLA is determined based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which tracks inflation in key categories like food and medical care. While inflation has cooled in recent months, the final adjustment for 2025 will depend on inflation data for July, August, and September.
The projected 2.5% increase, if finalized, would mean an average monthly benefit increase of roughly $48 for the estimated 70 million Social Security recipients. While this is lower than the past two years, it is still a necessary adjustment to help retirees keep pace with rising costs, even as inflation stabilizes.
However, experts warn that the 2.5% increase may not fully offset rising costs, especially for essentials like rent and groceries. This highlights the importance of planning for retirement and diversifying income sources beyond Social Security.
The SSA will announce the official COLA in October, with the new benefit amounts taking effect in January 2025.
