Sun Sep 15 13:39:15 UTC 2024: ## Casement Park Redevelopment Faces Setbacks: GAA President Calls for Clarity on Funding

**Belfast, Northern Ireland** – The planned redevelopment of Casement Park in West Belfast has hit a major snag, with the UK Government refusing to provide funding in time for the Euro 2028 Championship. This comes after a significant increase in the estimated project cost, with the government quoting over £400 million, compared to the GAA’s figure of around £300 million.

GAA President Jarlath Burns expressed disappointment, stating that the government’s “bad news” announcement on a Friday evening was “no way to do business.” He emphasized that the GAA has been working with expert consultants for a decade and the government’s figures are “commercially sensitive” and “unfair.”

Despite the setback, Burns confirmed that the GAA will continue to pursue the Casement Park redevelopment as a GAA stadium, and has urged the UK government to clarify its financial commitment. “We are asking how much they are willing to provide,” he said, adding that the GAA believes it is deserving of government support.

Northern Ireland’s Finance Minister Caoimhe Archibald has echoed the commitment to building Casement Park, but has also expressed concern about the fluctuating cost estimates. She intends to seek clarification on the government’s figure.

While the Euro 2028 dream for Casement Park has been dashed, both the GAA and the Northern Ireland Executive remain committed to the project’s completion. The focus now shifts to securing a realistic budget and finding a way to deliver a new stadium for the GAA community in West Belfast.
