**Gaza City, Gaza Strip** – As students across the Middle East begin a new school year, the children of Gaza face a stark reality: their education has been shattered by over 11 months of conflict.

The Israeli offensive launched after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 has created a humanitarian crisis that has brought education to a standstill.

At least 45,000 first-graders will be unable to start the school year, according to UNICEF, adding to the 625,000 children already denied an entire school year.

Israel’s bombing campaign has destroyed 123 schools and universities, and according to the Government Media Office, at least 11,500 students and 750 teachers have been killed.

Many schools have been transformed into shelters, providing a grim reminder of the constant fear and displacement. Children who once dreamt of a future filled with learning are now forced to prioritize survival.

“There are no more schools to learn in,” said 9-year-old Sajid. “Schools have become shelters for displaced people. Now, we go and fetch water and buy things from the market. We no longer study. If I had stayed in school, I would have grown up to become a famous doctor.”

The UN has accused Israeli forces of systematically obliterating Gaza’s academic system, citing independent experts and calling for the protection of schoolchildren.

While Israel claims it targets Hamas militants and minimizes harm to civilians, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Children are living in a constant state of fear and uncertainty, with the threat of violence looming over them.

Aid agencies are struggling to provide adequate protection and support, facing restrictions and limitations in their efforts. The situation has been deemed “a case of compounding vulnerabilities that are unlike any other place,” by Liz Allcock, head of protection at Medical Aid for Palestinians.

As the conflict drags on, the future for Gaza’s children remains uncertain. Their dreams of education and a brighter future are fading, replaced by the harsh realities of war and displacement.
