Sun Sep 15 11:34:55 UTC 2024: ## Liverpool Stunned by Nottingham Forest, Van Dijk Calls for Reality Check
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk expressed disappointment after their shock 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, calling for a reality check after the result punctured their early season optimism.
The Reds had started their Premier League campaign with three wins and a clean sheet, raising hopes of a strong title challenge. However, Forest, who hadn’t won at Anfield since 1969, secured a historic victory thanks to a 72nd-minute goal from substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Van Dijk acknowledged the team’s below-par performance and emphasized the need to raise their game if they are to achieve their ambitions. “We know how direct they are, so playing against a big striker, you can sometimes lose a challenge and you have to be ready for the second ball,” he said. “They got momentum in terms of winning the right challenges and they did their job very well. In terms of ourselves, we weren’t good enough.”
While the defeat undoubtedly disrupted their early rhythm, Van Dijk dismissed the suggestion that the international break was a factor. He also denied that new manager Arne Slot’s more measured approach made it difficult to ramp up the intensity when required.
“It’s difficult for me to say. Everyone is coming back from different places and playing a different way, but still, I think when we were not at our best, we created chances and it should have gone better,” he added. “But it is a performance we are definitely not happy with. We expect a lot better from ourselves and losing at home is something that can’t happen. We have to turn it around pretty quickly and that will be the focus.”
Liverpool now face a crucial Champions League clash against AC Milan on Tuesday, providing an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the disappointing result. “Everyone is disappointed but we also remind ourselves that Tuesday is another big game,” said Van Dijk. “If you want to dwell on things it is only going to backfire on yourself.”
