Ohio Senator JD Vance, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has backtracked on previous statements about Trump’s stance on abortion, stating he’s “learned his lesson” on speaking for the president before discussing issues directly with him. This comes after Trump’s evasive response to a question about whether he would veto a national abortion ban during last week’s presidential debate.
Vance, while reaffirming that Trump doesn’t support a national abortion ban, wouldn’t definitively say whether Trump would veto such a ban if passed by Congress. He deemed the question a “ridiculous hypothetical” and emphasized that he’d rather discuss “issues that actually might come before the president.”
This backtracking follows Vance’s previous statement, just a month ago, that Trump would veto a national abortion ban. However, Trump contradicted this during the debate, saying he had never discussed the issue with Vance.
The issue of abortion is expected to be a major point of contention in the upcoming election, with Democrats arguing Republicans would restrict or ban abortion access if they gain power. Despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed a national right to abortion, many Republicans, including Trump and Vance, have advocated for state-level decision making on abortion.
Meanwhile, Vance doubled down on another controversial statement, repeating the false claim that Haitian migrants in Ohio were eating pets. This claim, debunked by local officials, was initially made by Vance and subsequently echoed by Trump during the debate. Vance, despite the lack of evidence, claimed he’d received “firsthand accounts” from constituents, suggesting he was attempting to “create stories” to draw media attention to migration in Springfield, Ohio, which he alleged had been “totally ignored” by news outlets.
