**Beijing, China** – Military leaders from the United States and China met in Beijing this past weekend for routine talks, marking the resumption of these discussions after a two-year hiatus. The talks, which ended on Sunday, focused on contentious issues including Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine war, and ongoing disputes in the South China Sea.
The U.S. delegation, led by Michael Chase, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia, engaged in bilateral Defense Policy Coordination Talks with their Chinese counterparts. These talks, while not intended to resolve longstanding differences, are seen as a crucial step in preventing conflict between the two superpowers.
Communication between the two militaries had been severed in 2021 due to escalating tensions over issues such as Taiwan’s sovereignty, the origins of COVID-19, and economic disputes. The talks resumed after U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in San Francisco last November.
The talks focused on China’s support for Russia in the ongoing Ukraine war, as well as China’s increasingly assertive actions in the South China Sea. The latter issue is particularly sensitive, with recent incidents involving the Philippine coast guard and Chinese vessels raising concerns about potential escalation.
One such incident involved the Philippine ship BRP Teresa Magbanua, which recently departed from a disputed shoal, Sabina Shoal, to resupply and provide medical care to its crew members. The U.S. is closely monitoring the situation, as China has previously blocked resupply attempts and asserted its claim over the shoal.
China confirmed the departure of the Philippine ship, stating it “infringed on China’s territorial sovereignty” and that its actions were “taken in accordance with the law.” However, the Philippine government has vowed to replace the ship, leaving the future of the disputed shoal uncertain.
Despite the resumption of talks, their long-term sustainability remains unclear, particularly with the upcoming U.S. presidential election looming. The focus now shifts to whether the two sides can maintain this fragile communication channel and prevent further escalation of tensions.
