**Tokyo, Japan – September 13, 2024** – Japan is poised to significantly enhance its air power with the acquisition of nine more KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tankers from the United States, boosting its ability to project force across the vast western Pacific. The US State Department has approved a potential $4.1 billion sale under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
The move comes as Japan grapples with escalating tensions in the region, particularly with China and Russia. The KC-46As, which extend the reach and endurance of Japan’s air force, will be vital in bolstering its defense posture.
“This is a significant development for Japan’s defense capabilities,” said a defense analyst. “The KC-46As will allow Japan to sustain air operations for longer durations and over greater distances, enabling them to respond effectively to any potential threats.”
The sale, however, requires congressional approval and further negotiations regarding the final quantity and price. If approved, the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) will have a total of 15 KC-46As in its inventory, making it the second international operator of the aircraft after the US Air Force.
Japan’s interest in additional tankers comes as a surprise, as previous statements did not foresee a fleet expansion. The decision is likely driven by the vast stretches of ocean surrounding Japan, which pose significant challenges for any power projection efforts.
The US Air Force is also increasing its reliance on the KC-46A, gradually phasing out the older KC-135. Despite this transition, the new aircraft faces ongoing challenges with technical issues, including six critical deficiencies that could compromise safety.
Interestingly, the number of tankers requested by Japan is higher than the four initially listed in its recent budget, demonstrating a growing awareness of its strategic needs. This acquisition also coincides with Japan’s shift from a defense-only stance to one that allows for preemptive strikes against potential threats, particularly North Korea and China.
The latest development highlights Japan’s increasing focus on bolstering its military capabilities, particularly in the face of growing regional tensions.
