Sun Sep 15 15:12:25 UTC 2024: ## Boeing and Striking Workers to Resume Talks Under Federal Mediator
**SEATTLE, WA -** Talks between Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 751 will resume on Tuesday under the guidance of a federal mediator, the union announced Saturday. The move comes after workers overwhelmingly rejected a proposed contract from the embattled aviation giant, triggering a strike that has halted production at two major Boeing assembly plants in the Seattle region.
The union, representing over 33,000 workers, called for the walkout after a resounding 94.6% rejection of the proposed contract and a 96% vote in favor of a strike. The strike, which began Friday, marks the first walkout at Boeing in 16 years and is causing further delays in the company’s efforts to recover from financial struggles.
Boeing has expressed a desire to return to the bargaining table, with CEO Kelly Ortberg hoping a 25% wage increase over four years and investments in the Puget Sound region would satisfy workers. However, employees deemed the offer insufficient, citing a decade of stagnating wages.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) will facilitate the negotiations between Boeing and the IAM on Tuesday. The union, in a statement, called upon members to “show Boeing that our voices aren’t just loud; they are unstoppable.”
The last strike at Boeing, in 2008, lasted 57 days. The outcome of this renewed negotiation remains uncertain, but it is clear that the striking workers are determined to secure a fair and equitable contract.
