Sun Sep 15 09:04:32 UTC 2024: ## Ukraine Proposes “Freeze” of Hostilities in Parts of Frontline, Reports Bild

**Kiev, Ukraine** – Ukraine is reportedly considering a new strategy for the ongoing conflict with Russia, including a freeze on hostilities in certain areas along the front lines, according to German tabloid Bild. This proposal, attributed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, hinges on Western support, particularly the authorization to use long-range missiles provided by Western allies to strike deep inside Russia.

Zelensky is expected to present his revised strategy to US President Joe Biden during a planned visit in the coming weeks, according to Bild. The strategy reportedly includes:

* **Demand for deploying long-range weapons deep into Russia.**
* **Readiness to accept local ceasefires on specific portions of the front line.**
* **A provisional freezing of the conflict in these areas.**

This proposal comes as Ukrainian officials face pressure from Western allies to present a more realistic plan for the conflict, given the significant financial and military support required for a full Ukrainian victory. Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy reportedly informed Ukrainian officials that the West cannot realistically commit to the hundreds of billions of dollars needed for a full Ukrainian victory.

Previously, Zelensky had vowed to reclaim all of Ukraine’s territory lost to Russia since the start of the conflict in February 2022, including Crimea. Russia has consistently maintained that it is not open to discussions on the status of Crimea and insists that Ukraine must accept the current “reality on the ground.”

Moscow has expressed disinterest in a ceasefire, stating that it seeks a “complete and final end of the conflict.” Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a ceasefire contingent on legally binding guarantees from Ukraine that it will not join NATO and withdraw its troops from all territories claimed by Russia. This proposal was rejected by Kiev and its Western backers.

The proposed “freeze” of hostilities on parts of the front line represents a shift in Ukraine’s strategy and potentially opens a new avenue for negotiations. However, it remains unclear how Russia will respond to this proposal and whether the conditions outlined by Zelensky, particularly the use of long-range missiles against Russian territory, will be acceptable to the West.
