**Orlando, FL** – While The Walt Disney Company is facing criticism for its handling of partnerships and a rocky reputation for “playing nice,” one key relationship is set to continue: UFC and ESPN. According to TKO Holdings president and chief operating officer Mark Shapiro, UFC plans to renew its broadcast deal with Disney’s sports network, ESPN.
Shapiro credits Disney CEO Bob Iger’s “sports freak” status for the strong partnership. Iger, a known sports enthusiast, has a deep understanding of the industry and is actively involved in content decisions. His passion, Shapiro says, is a key factor in the success of the UFC’s presence on ESPN.
“They understand synergy. They understand marketing. They do a great job technologically, with developing their platforms, engaging their consumers,” Shapiro stated, highlighting ESPN’s strengths.
The announcement comes at a time when Disney is experiencing some turbulence in its partnerships. The company’s joint venture with Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox, Venu Sports, was recently shut down by a federal judge. Additionally, Disney and DirecTV are locked in a dispute over carriage agreements, leaving millions without access to ESPN and other channels.
Despite these challenges, UFC seems unfazed. The mixed martial arts league is confident in the long-term strength of its relationship with Disney and ESPN, viewing Iger’s sports passion as a valuable asset.
