Sun Sep 15 10:39:49 UTC 2024: ## UK Government’s Funding Pause Threatens Two Northern Ireland City Deals

**Belfast, Northern Ireland -** Two of the four city deals for Northern Ireland are facing an uncertain future after the UK government announced a pause in funding. The deals, worth over £1.5 billion, were intended to stimulate regeneration across the region.

The government’s decision came just hours after it confirmed the withdrawal of funding for the redevelopment of Belfast’s Casement Park, a key project for the Euro 2028 bid. This has sparked outrage from Northern Ireland politicians, with Finance Minister Caoimhe Archibald describing the government’s actions as “a reset on the reset” and “a good day for bad news”.

Archibald confirmed that the regeneration funding packages for Londonderry and Belfast are still expected to proceed, leaving the Mid South West and Causeway Coast and Glens deals in jeopardy.

The city deals were designed to fund various projects, including innovation hubs, museums, and even a cable car in the Mournes. The £300 million Derry City and Strabane deal includes plans for:

* A new riverside park and public realm.
* A new transport hub.
* Upgrades to the Magee University campus.

The Belfast deal, which spans beyond the city itself, aims to fund projects including:

* A new sports stadium.
* A cultural and heritage hub.
* Improvements to transport infrastructure.

The paused Causeway Coast and Glens deal planned to invest in:

* A new visitor center at the Giant’s Causeway.
* Improvements to coastal tourism infrastructure.
* Support for local businesses.

The Mid South West deal, which has yet to release a detailed list of projects, focused on skills development, innovation, infrastructure, and tourism.

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill described the UK government’s decision as “unacceptable and deplorable”, echoing the sentiment of many political figures and councils.

The funding pause comes ahead of the UK government’s spending review, and the situation is expected to be reviewed further. The future of these crucial regeneration projects remains uncertain, with significant potential consequences for economic growth and development in Northern Ireland.
