**West Palm Beach, FL** – Former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, was the target of an apparent assassination attempt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday afternoon, according to the FBI. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, is in custody.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. ET when a Secret Service agent, stationed one hole ahead of Trump, spotted a rifle sticking out of a fence at the golf course. The agent immediately engaged with the suspect, who then fled in a black Nissan. Secret Service agents fired at the fleeing suspect.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated that the suspect was approximately 300 to 500 yards from Trump at the time of the incident. The suspect was apprehended shortly after on Interstate 95.
While Trump was unharmed, local officials acknowledged that security measures were less robust for a presidential nominee compared to a sitting president, making detection more difficult. The threat level has been elevated, according to the Secret Service.
Trump confirmed his safety in a statement released by his campaign and later on Truth Social, expressing gratitude to the Secret Service, law enforcement, and “brave and dedicated Patriots” for their swift response. His running mate, Senator JD Vance, also confirmed speaking with Trump and reporting that he was in good spirits.
President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed on the incident and expressed relief that Trump was safe. Attorney General Merrick Garland has also been briefed and is monitoring the situation.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement condemning the act of political violence and calling for the perpetrator to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He commended the Secret Service for their quick action in protecting Trump.
