The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has cancelled all remaining screenings of the documentary “Russians at War” after facing significant backlash and threats from the Ukrainian community. The film, which was co-produced by Canada and France, was praised by The Globe and Mail but drew sharp criticism from Ukrainian-Canadians and others who saw it as Russian propaganda.
The controversy surrounding the film centers around its director, Anastasia Trofimova, a Russian filmmaker with a history of working for RT, a Russian state-funded media outlet known for its pro-Kremlin propaganda. Ukrainian leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, condemned the film and its inclusion in TIFF.
Despite initial pledges to continue the screenings, TIFF ultimately yielded to pressure and paused the film’s presentations after receiving reports of “significant threats to festival operations and public safety.” However, the Toronto Police Service later stated that they had received no reports of any such threats.
The film’s producers claimed the cancellation was due to “irresponsible, dishonest, and inflammatory public statements” that incited “violent hate.”
The controversy highlights the complexities of showcasing films with potentially controversial content in a sensitive geopolitical context. TIFF’s decision to cancel the screenings underscores the importance of balancing artistic freedom with the need to address concerns from communities directly affected by the film’s subject matter.
