Sun Sep 15 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## “The Shadow Strays” Review: Timo Tjahjanto’s Latest is a Brutally Exhausting Action Sprawl

Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, known for his maximalist style and penchant for over-the-top violence, returns with “The Shadow Strays,” a Netflix action film that’s ambitious in scale but ultimately lacks the precision and focus to truly deliver.

The film follows 13, a member of a shadowy mercenary organization known as “Shadows,” who struggles with her own morality as she’s tasked with eliminating a Yakuza clan. Tjahjanto’s trademark gore and high-octane action are on full display, but despite the visceral brutality, “The Shadow Strays” feels bloated and unfocused.

While the film boasts a large cast of characters, including a crooked cop, a trigger-happy girlfriend, and a large, S&M-loving baddie, none of them are fleshed out enough to truly engage the audience. Tjahjanto’s indulgence in over-plotting and convoluted storylines leaves the audience feeling lost and disinterested.

The film’s core premise, dealing with the emotional struggles of a woman forced to suppress her humanity, is largely unexplored. While the intensity of 13’s inner conflict is conveyed through the brutal fight scenes, the film’s numerous filler scenes and underdeveloped characters ultimately detract from the emotional depth.

While the action sequences are frequently “awesome,” they often lack the precision and engagement of Tjahjanto’s earlier works. The camera work, though dynamic, feels rushed and disjointed, and the excessive use of CGI blood and effects takes away from the rawness of the fight choreography.

Despite its flaws, “The Shadow Strays” still offers a glimpse of Tjahjanto’s raw talent. His ability to craft brutal, visceral action scenes is undeniable, and his ambition is evident in his attempt to create a sprawling, intricate action epic. However, “The Shadow Strays” falls short of its potential due to its lack of focus and its inability to fully flesh out its themes and characters.

“The Shadow Strays” premieres on Netflix October 17.
