**Dry Tortugas, Florida** – Jared Isaacman, a tech entrepreneur, returned to Earth on Sunday after a five-day mission that saw him and his crew break altitude records and perform the first ever private spacewalk. The SpaceX capsule, carrying Isaacman, two SpaceX engineers, and a former Air Force Thunderbird pilot, splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico near the Dry Tortugas.
The crew ascended to an altitude of 875 miles, surpassing the height of the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope. Isaacman and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis conducted the historic spacewalk, becoming the 264th and 265th individuals, respectively, to ever perform such an endeavor.
The spacewalk, though short, was a significant step for SpaceX, allowing them to test new spacesuit technology in preparation for future missions to Mars. Gillis also performed a musical piece in orbit, showcasing her talent as a classically trained violinist.
Isaacman, who funded the mission as part of his Polaris space exploration program, has already completed two flights with SpaceX, with two more planned. His first mission raised over $250 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Polaris Dawn mission was a collaborative effort between Isaacman and SpaceX, with the cost shared between the two.
The successful completion of the mission marks a major milestone for private space exploration, showcasing the capabilities of both SpaceX and private individuals to push the boundaries of space travel.
