Sat Sep 14 23:10:16 UTC 2024: ## GPs Accused of Wrongfully Charging Women for Maternity Care

**Dublin, Ireland** – Several women have come forward alleging that they were wrongly charged for maternity care appointments, despite being entitled to free services under the HSE’s Maternity and Infant Care Scheme.

Multiple women interviewed by The Journal reported being charged €70 for basic appointments that are meant to be covered by the State. One woman, Caroline, described paying for four GP appointments during her pregnancy, while another, Deirdre, was charged for a confirmation of pregnancy appointment.

The HSE’s Maternity and Infant Care Scheme covers a specific number of appointments, including the initial pregnancy diagnosis. However, the women interviewed claimed their GPs argued the scheme did not cover certain appointments, like the first appointment for pregnancy confirmation.

The HSE has stated that GPs are entitled to a fee of €242.85 for first pregnancies and €270.52 for subsequent pregnancies, paid based on the services provided. The HSE maintains that they will not pay for services not rendered.

The women have criticized the inconsistency in information provided by GPs, leading to financial hardship and inequity in care. Some have called the charges a “tax on women”, highlighting the vulnerability of pregnant women.

The Social Democrats and Labour Party have called for an immediate review of the complaints and full refunds for any women wrongly charged. Both parties have emphasized the importance of free maternity care and urged the HSE to clarify the situation for GPs and patients.

The incidents have brought to light concerns about transparency and accountability in the healthcare system, with calls for a reporting mechanism to prevent future issues and ensure equitable access to essential services.
