Sun Sep 15 12:24:14 UTC 2024: ## Casement Park Redevelopment Delayed, Euro 2028 Matches in Belfast Cancelled

**Belfast, Northern Ireland** – The redevelopment of Casement Park GAA ground in west Belfast has been delayed, dashing hopes of the stadium hosting Euro 2028 matches. The Irish government, who pledged €50 million to the project, expressed disappointment but affirmed their commitment to the funding.

The decision was announced jointly by UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn, who cited a dramatic increase in construction costs from an initial £180 million to a potential £400 million.

Taoiseach Simon Harris acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the importance of ultimately having a world-class sporting facility in Belfast. He reaffirmed the €50 million commitment, stating that the Irish government would continue to work with the Northern Ireland Executive and the British government to ensure the project’s completion.

While the UK government remains committed to the redevelopment, the GAA expressed concern over the missed opportunity, highlighting the substantial investment already made.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill echoed the disappointment, but confirmed the Executive’s ongoing commitment to the Casement Park project.

The focus now shifts to finding a solution to the escalating costs and ensuring the successful completion of the redevelopment, despite the setback for Euro 2028.
