**LOS ANGELES -** FX’s epic historical drama “Shogun” dominated the 75th Emmy Awards on Sunday night, taking home the coveted award for Best Drama Series. The win marked a triumphant evening for the ambitious remake, which surpassed previous records with a total of 25 nominations and a record-breaking 14 Creative Arts Emmys won prior to the main ceremony.
The night was filled with accolades for “Shogun,” with lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai winning for their performances as Lord Toranaga and Lady Mariko, respectively. Director Frederick E.O. Toye also received an Emmy for his work on the series.
“You guys greenlit a very expensive, subtitled Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition,” quipped showrunner Justin Marks during his acceptance speech for Best Drama. “I have no idea why you did that, but thank you for your faith in this incredible team.”
“Shogun” is a reimagining of the 1980 NBC mini-series of the same name, itself adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel. Set in 17th-century Japan, the series follows English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) as he becomes entangled in a deadly political conflict between the cunning Lord Toranaga and his translator, Lady Mariko. Unlike the original mini-series, the new “Shogun” tells the story primarily through the perspectives of its Japanese characters.
The series, which debuted in February, has been lauded by critics and viewers alike for its epic scale and attention to authenticity. Initially billed as a limited series, “Shogun” is now set to continue with additional seasons after FX announced its development in May.
Other nominees for Best Drama included “3 Body Problem,” “The Crown,” “Fallout,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Morning Show,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and “Slow Horses.”
