Sun Sep 15 15:30:57 UTC 2024: ## New Drug Shows Promise in Fight Against Super Gonorrhea

**Nairobi, Kenya** – A new single-dose oral suspension, zoliflodacin, has shown significant promise in treating gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that has become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Researchers at the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) say the drug could be a game-changer in combating the spread of multi-drug resistant “super gonorrhea,” particularly in countries like Kenya where the disease is a major concern.

Zoliflodacin, currently in phase three trials, demonstrated an impressive 90.9% efficiency in treating gonorrhea. It represents the first new antibiotic class for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for the infection, in 25 years.

“The trial had global reach with trial sites in Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States,” said the researchers, noting that the majority of participants came from regions where gonorrhea is most prevalent, including Africa and Asia.

The researchers emphasize that zoliflodacin is effective against gonorrhea infections resistant to other existing drugs. Importantly, no resistance to the drug was observed in the trial. This, they believe, could be attributed to its unique mechanism of action, which makes it more difficult for the bacteria to develop resistance.

“We want to understand what is the most appropriate use of zoliflodacin bearing in mind patient needs, public health needs, and the need to preserve the lifespan of the drug,” said Pierre Daram, lead researcher at GARDP. “Whether it should be for first-line or second-line use remains to be determined.”

The news comes as Kenya faces a growing threat of super gonorrhea. A recent study conducted by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) found that 100% of 400 commercial sex workers in Nairobi tested positive for gonorrhea, with most strains resistant to common antibiotics.

While zoliflodacin offers hope for a new weapon in the fight against this challenging infection, the researchers caution that it is vital to use it strategically to ensure its long-term effectiveness. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal use of this promising new drug and to address the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant gonorrhea.
