**Shillong, Meghalaya:** Members of the Meitei community in Shillong staged a sit-in protest on Sunday at the Manipur Bhavan, condemning recent rocket and drone attacks on Meitei villages in Manipur by Kuki insurgents. The protest was organized by the Manipuri Elders Consortium Shillong (MECS), with many Meitei students and community members participating.
The protesters expressed outrage over the aerial attacks targeting Meitei villages in Manipur, resulting in civilian casualties. They also raised concerns about the alleged inflow of illegal immigrants, the growing threat of narco-terrorism, and propaganda campaigns targeting the Meitei community.
MECS issued a statement urging immediate action to address the ongoing violence and bring peace to Manipur. They emphasized the need to protect the indigenous communities of the state.
While Kuki civil society organisations have denied using weaponized drones, the Manipur Police are considering handing the case over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The clashes between the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes, who inhabit the hill areas of Manipur, have escalated in recent months, resulting in over 220 deaths and the displacement of nearly 50,000 people. The conflict stems from long-standing grievances, including the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status and the Kuki community’s desire for a separate administration.
