Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris last week had minimal impact on voters, according to a recent poll. While the endorsement did drive a significant increase in traffic to the federal voter registration website, the majority of respondents stated it made no difference in their voting intentions.
Despite the lukewarm response, former President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his outrage. “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” he wrote, dismissing her endorsement as a sign of her “very liberal” stance.
The ABC News and Ipsos poll, which surveyed 3,276 adults, found that 81% of respondents said the endorsement had no impact on their likelihood of voting for Harris. Only 6% said it made them more likely to vote for her, while 13% said it made them less likely—a group that was largely comprised of Trump supporters.
While Swift’s endorsement may not have swayed voters, it did drive 405,999 visitors to the vote.gov website, far surpassing the site’s daily average. However, this doesn’t necessarily translate to increased voter registration.
The poll also found that Swift’s endorsement had minimal impact on her target demographic of young women. Only 8% of women under 30 said they were more likely to support Harris because of Swift’s endorsement.
Political experts are divided on the effectiveness of celebrity endorsements. Some believe they can be impactful, particularly in primary elections, while others argue their influence is limited. The upcoming election is expected to be close, and any increase in voter turnout, especially among young people, could swing the results. However, it would be difficult to attribute any such shift solely to Swift’s endorsement.
Swift’s endorsement of Harris came after her previous endorsement of President Joe Biden in 2020. She has been vocal about her political views since then, particularly criticizing Trump’s policies and rhetoric.
