**KOTA KINABALU** – The administration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made significant strides in resolving claims under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), underscoring the government’s commitment to fulfilling the agreement’s agenda.

During Anwar’s two years in office, seven out of eleven MA63 claims have been resolved, including the designation of Public Works Departments in Sabah and Sarawak as technical departments, the transfer of authority to regulate gas supply, and amendments to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) Act 1995 to appoint representatives from Sabah and Sarawak governments as permanent members of LHDN.

Analysts credit the Prime Minister’s “consistent dedication and thoroughness” in ensuring that all claims requested by the Sabah and Sarawak governments are fulfilled. Dr Syahruddin Awang Ahmad, a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), highlights that the government’s focus on MA63 sets it apart from previous administrations.

“Resolving MA63 claims was not easy,” said Dr Syahruddin, noting the complexities involved in financial issues, legal governance, and the Federal Constitution.

Furthermore, the increase in the interim special grant to Sabah and Sarawak from RM300 million to RM600 million next year demonstrates the Prime Minister’s deep concern about rising costs in both states.

Anwar’s commitment to MA63 is further reflected in his open approach and willingness to engage with stakeholders through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63).

“This approach signifies a testament to his commitment as the chief executive to ensure that the two states remain significant entities within Malaysia,” said Dr Syahruddin.

Associate Prof Dr Romzi Ationg, also from UMS, believes Anwar’s dedication to the MA63 agenda aligns with the spirit of Malaysia’s formation and signifies the government’s efforts to address dissatisfaction related to the issue.

“This ongoing dialogue has led to decisions and the finalization of various matters,” said Dr Romzi. However, he emphasizes that Sabahans and Sarawakians hope that these commitments will be properly implemented and that the provisions of MA63 will be honored.
