Sun Sep 15 13:47:25 UTC 2024: ## North Korea’s Brutal Crackdown on Religious Freedom Continues, 10 Years After UN Report

**Seoul, South Korea** – A new report released by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) condemns North Korea’s ongoing repression of civil and religious liberties, highlighting the particularly harsh targeting of Christians. The report, titled ‘North Korea: We cannot look away,’ marks the 10th anniversary of a landmark UN report that detailed widespread human rights violations in the country.

The CSW report highlights that despite the UN’s condemnation, the situation in North Korea has not improved, and may have even worsened in recent years due to factors like the pandemic and forced repatriation of North Korean refugees.

The report details the severe punishments faced by those who express dissenting opinions or beliefs, including torture, detention in political prison camps, and even execution. This includes individuals suspected of using religious materials, especially the Bible.

CSW CEO Scot Bower stated that the Kim regime remains committed to acting as a pariah on the international stage, with no intention of aligning with global human rights standards. The report calls for increased dialogue and innovative solutions to address this “worst human rights and humanitarian crises in the world.”

Echoing this sentiment, a new UN report by Secretary-General António Guterres urges accountability for North Korean leaders, emphasizing the escalation of repression against freedom of thought and expression between July 2023 and May 2024.

Timothy Cho, a North Korean escapee working for Open Doors, a religious persecution charity, called for justice for those responsible for the suffering of hundreds of thousands. However, with China and Russia siding with the regime, this remains a distant dream.

Simon Lee, an Open Doors coordinator working with North Koreans, explained that the regime’s “Law on Rejecting Reactionary Thought and Culture” targets Christians and religious materials, including the Bible, under the guise of combating “superstitious materials.”

This latest report emphasizes the urgent need for global action to address the dire human rights situation in North Korea and to ensure freedom of religion and belief for its citizens.
