Sun Sep 15 15:02:21 UTC 2024: ## Norris Surprises Himself with Fourth Place Finish, Plays Key Role in Piastri’s Win

Baku, Azerbaijan – Lando Norris, starting 15th after a disastrous qualifying session, defied expectations to finish fourth in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, ahead of title rival Max Verstappen. Despite a difficult start, Norris found himself in the top 10 and eventually capitalized on Verstappen’s struggles to claim a surprising fourth place.

Norris, who was only 20-22 seconds behind Verstappen at the race’s start, was pleased with the result, particularly considering his qualifying woes. “I don’t think we could have asked for a lot more today,” Norris said. “We would have been happy with eighth, as we just expected the top four teams to go with me being the eighth car. A good start, good strategy.”

However, his unexpected performance wasn’t just about individual achievement. Norris’s tactical maneuvering also played a crucial role in securing his teammate, Oscar Piastri’s, maiden Formula 1 victory.

After Piastri was left vulnerable to an undercut by Sergio Perez, Norris held up Perez, allowing Piastri to pit two laps later and maintain his position ahead of the Mexican driver. “I didn’t slow down, I just saved my tyres a little bit more as they were overheating a little bit,” Norris explained. “It allowed Oscar to stay ahead and potentially get the win today, so I’m happy to know I played a small part in that, and for us as a team, that’s what we need to do.”

While Norris’s fourth place finish may have surprised some, it served as a valuable boost for both the driver and his team, closing the gap in the championship standings and highlighting McLaren’s newfound strength.
