**Malappuram, Kerala:** A 24-year-old man’s death due to Nipah virus infection has once again put Kerala on high alert. The Malappuram district authorities have confirmed the fatality and implemented stringent measures, including mandatory face masks and restrictions in several areas.
The restrictions, enforced in Tiruvallur and Manpath grama panchayats, limit business hours from 10 am to 7 pm, excluding essential services like milk distribution, newspapers, and vegetable vendors. Medical shops are exempted. Educational institutions, madrasas, anganwadis, and movie theaters have been closed.
Health authorities are urging people to maintain physical distancing and immediately contact medical professionals if they experience fever or any other symptoms, instead of self-medicating. They have also emphasized the importance of food safety, advising people to avoid eating fruits that have been touched by birds or animals or fallen from trees. All fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed before consumption.
The Kerala Health Minister, Veena George, confirmed that the recent death of the 24-year-old was due to Nipah virus infection. The Malappuram district is witnessing an increase in cases, with this being the second fatality.
