Johannesburg, South Africa – South Africa mourns the loss of veteran actor Darlington Michaels, best known for his iconic role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela on the long-running soap opera “Isidingo.” Michaels passed away on Saturday at the age of 78 after a brief illness.
Born Teboho Ndarana in Pimville, Soweto, Michaels’ career spanned several decades, encompassing theatre, film, and television. He was a prominent figure in South African entertainment, known for his vibrant personality and his ability to bring characters to life with authenticity.
Michaels began his career in the arts during the turbulent apartheid years, writing and starring in a politically charged play, “Survival,” in 1984. His work, which highlighted the harsh realities of apartheid-era prison systems, was met with resistance from the authorities, leading to his arrest and imprisonment.
Despite these challenges, Michaels continued to use his voice for social change through his art. He made his television debut in 1997, landing the role of Papa G on “Isidingo,” a character that cemented his legacy. Known for his flamboyant style, including silk shirts and heavy gold chains, Papa G became a beloved figure in South African pop culture.
Beyond “Isidingo,” Michaels graced numerous film and television projects, including the sitcom “Chandies” and the telenovela “The Road.” He was a vocal advocate for fair compensation for actors and spoke out against the systemic issues within the industry.
Outside of acting, Michaels ran his own production company, Melisizwe Productions, specializing in community theatre. He was passionate about using the arts to educate and inspire young people.
Michaels is survived by his wife, two children, and six grandchildren. He will be remembered for his talent, resilience, and passion, and his contributions to South African entertainment will forever be cherished.
