Sun Sep 15 10:33:00 UTC 2024: ## Medical Schools Prioritizing Social Justice Over Medical Science, Study Finds

A new study by Jay P. Greene, senior fellow at Do No Harm, reveals a disturbing trend in medical school curricula: a growing emphasis on social justice and diversity at the expense of traditional medical education.

Analyzing publicly available course catalogs from top medical schools across the country, Greene found that keywords related to political ideology appear far more frequently than scientific and medical terms. In the top 10 medical schools, only Duke University and Washington University prioritize scientific over political content, while institutions like Stanford and Baylor College of Medicine heavily favor ideological topics like “environmental sustainability,” “gender issues,” and “immigration reform.”

Even courses traditionally focused on medical science have been infiltrated by ideological themes. Harvard Medical School’s “Integrated Human Pathophysiology” course includes “health equity” and “climate change,” while the Icahn School of Medicine’s “Introduction to Anesthesiology” focuses on social justice work.

Greene argues that this trend, driven by activists and the Association of American Medical Colleges’ emphasis on topics like “intersectionality” and “colonization,” will ultimately lead to a crisis in physician quality. He points to UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine, known for its politically charged curriculum, as a prime example. Internal documents reveal a significant increase in student failures on standardized exams in critical medical fields, likely due to the de-emphasis on traditional medical training.

This shift in focus, Greene warns, represents a dangerous experiment in medical education. While the activists pushing for ideological curriculum changes may be conducting their own “trial,” the real test will be the impact on American health when physicians lacking sufficient medical knowledge are tasked with providing care.
