Sun Sep 15 16:24:28 UTC 2024: ## Hojgaard Steals Irish Open Victory from McIlroy in Dramatic Finish
**Royal County Down, Northern Ireland:** Rasmus Hojgaard snatched a thrilling victory at the Irish Open on Sunday, denying Rory McIlroy a fairytale win in front of his home crowd.
McIlroy, the overnight leader, held a commanding four-shot advantage early in the round. However, bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes opened the door for Hojgaard, who stormed home with four birdies in the final five holes, including a brilliant bunker shot on the 17th.
Hojgaard’s closing 65 propelled him to a nine-under total, leaving McIlroy needing an eagle on the final hole to force a playoff. Though he landed his approach shot within 10 feet, his putt narrowly missed the cup, handing Hojgaard his fifth DP World Tour title.
The 23-year-old Dane, who emulates his countryman Soren Kjeldsen’s 2015 victory at Royal County Down, celebrated a well-deserved win. However, it marks yet another agonizing near-miss for McIlroy, who has endured a frustrating season with close calls at the US Open and the Olympics.
“I felt like I was in control of the tournament for most of the day,” McIlroy said after the round. “But the two bogeys on 15 and 17 opened the door for someone to have a good finish like what Rasmus did on the last few holes.”
Hojgaard’s win comes on the back of a stellar performance that saw him chip in on the 10th hole and overcome a dropped shot on the 13th. His consistent birdieing on the final stretch solidified his victory.
“This feels pretty good,” Hojgaard said. “There were a lot of nerves coming down the stretch. I was trying to get to a number, eight-under, today and see if that would have a chance. Obviously, I holed out a few times and get to nine-under.”
While McIlroy will undoubtedly be disappointed, his focus now shifts towards the upcoming Portrush Open, where he will be eager to redeem himself. Hojgaard, on the other hand, will be looking to build on his momentum as he bids for a place in Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team for 2024.
