**Austin, TX** – In a dominant performance against UTSA on Saturday, Texas Longhorns backup quarterback Arch Manning filled in for the injured Quinn Ewers and led the No. 2 team to a 56-7 victory. Manning threw for four touchdowns and 223 yards, adding a 67-yard rushing score in his most extensive collegiate action.
Ewers left the game early in the second quarter after suffering an oblique strain on a non-contact injury. While the severity of the injury is still being assessed, it appears to be a non-structural injury.
Manning, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, entered the game in the second quarter and immediately made his presence felt. He connected with DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 19-yard touchdown on his first snap. His 67-yard touchdown run later in the quarter was the longest by a Texas quarterback since Vince Young in 2005.
The Longhorns’ offense continued to thrive with Manning at the helm, scoring on five of his nine possessions and racking up 614 total yards. His impressive performance, including three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, showcased his talent and potential.
“Obviously there’s a lot to improve on and grow from, but I’m glad I got to get in there and get hit again and feel what it’s like,” said Manning after the game.
While Texas celebrates a resounding victory, the focus shifts to Ewers’ health and his availability for future games.
“I think Quinn’s in pretty good spirits,” said Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian. “He was playing such good football. My hope is this isn’t a long-term thing, that we’ll get him back, because we need as many healthy good players as we can get for this journey that we’re on right now.”
The Longhorns’ next challenge comes against UL Monroe this weekend, after which they begin their SEC schedule with a home game against Mississippi State on September 28.
The injury to Ewers, who was a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, has significantly impacted his odds, while Manning’s have shortened dramatically. The Longhorns will need to rely on the depth of their quarterback room, including true freshman Trey Owens, to navigate the remainder of the season.
