The acclaimed anime film “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” is set to make its North American debut this October. GKIDS, the distributor behind the film, announced screenings for October 4th in New York and Los Angeles, followed by wider releases on October 6th and 7th across North America, including Canada.
The film, directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, tells the story of Fujino, a fourth-grader who draws four-panel comics for her school newspaper. She encounters Kyomoto, a classmate who has been skipping school, and their lives intertwine. The film features voice acting talents Yumi Kawai and Mizuki Yoshida as Fujino and Kyomoto, respectively.
“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” has already made a significant impact in Japan. It debuted at #2 in ticket sales (and #1 in weekend earnings) upon its release on June 28th, selling over 1 million tickets and earning over 1.73 billion yen (about US$12 million) at the Japanese box office.
The film is based on the popular manga by Yasutaka Fujimoto, which has gained widespread recognition, winning the first Rakuten Kobo E-book Awards and topping Takarajimasha’s “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook. The manga has also been nominated for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards and was second place at the 15th Manga Taisho awards.
To further celebrate the film’s arrival in North America, GKIDS will be hosting screenings that include a special 20-minute interview with director Oshiyama and the film’s cast. Fans of anime and manga are sure to be eager to witness this acclaimed film on the big screen.
