Mon Sep 16 08:00:23 UTC 2024: ## Former Principal and Police Officer Remanded in CBI Custody in Doctor’s Murder Case
**Kolkata, India** – The former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and the Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, were remanded in CBI custody until September 17th in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor.
The CBI, alleging a potential larger conspiracy, claims both individuals played crucial roles in the crime. Evidence suggests Ghosh instructed Mondal on how to proceed with the case. The agency further claims both attempted to downplay the incident and shield the perpetrators.
The CBI highlighted inconsistencies in Mondal’s actions, including his delayed arrival at the crime scene despite it being a short distance away. They also questioned the filing of a general diary by the police, which stated the victim was unconscious, and the 14-hour delay in registering an FIR.
Mondal was arrested after being questioned for over seven hours. He was unable to provide satisfactory explanations for his actions after the doctor’s body was discovered. The CBI alleges he tampered with the crime scene and delayed filing an FIR.
This arrest comes on the heels of Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police, who was arrested a day after the doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall.
The arrests follow days of protests by junior doctors who are demanding justice for their colleague. The Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, had met with the protesting doctors but failed to reach a resolution after disagreements about the format of the meeting.
The CBI investigation continues, with further interrogation of both Ghosh and Mondal expected in the coming days.
