Mon Sep 16 11:00:35 UTC 2024: ## CBI Remands Former Principal and Police Officer in Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case

**Kolkata, September 15, 2024:** A Sealdah court on Sunday remanded former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondol in CBI custody until September 17. The duo were arrested on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the medical college.

The CBI informed the court that a larger conspiracy may be involved in the case and that both Ghosh and Mondol played significant roles. Evidence suggests communication between the two, with Ghosh allegedly giving instructions to Mondol on how to handle the case.

The CBI requested three days of custody to question the accused, claiming they attempted to downplay the incident and cover up the crime.

The investigation has unearthed several irregularities, including Mondol’s unusually late arrival at the crime scene despite being just a five-minute drive away. The CBI also raised concerns about the police filing a general diary stating the victim was unconscious and questioned the 14-hour delay in registering an FIR.

Ghosh, arrested earlier for alleged financial irregularities during his time at the institute, remains in judicial custody. Both individuals are accused of tampering with the crime scene, destroying evidence, violating official rules, participating in a criminal conspiracy, and misleading investigators.

Protests continued outside the CGO complex as Mondol was escorted out in a car. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.

The arrests come amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors demanding justice for their colleague and an end to police brutality. These protests have been ongoing since the discovery of the doctor’s body on August 9th.
