**Gaza City, Palestine** – The Israeli military has acknowledged that a November air strike likely resulted in the deaths of three Israeli captives held by Hamas in Gaza. The military, after months of denials, confirmed the “high probability” that the strike, targeting a Hamas commander, was responsible for the deaths of Corporal Nik Beizer, Sergeant Ron Sherman, and French-Israeli national Elia Toledano.

The bodies of the captives were recovered on December 14, but the cause of death remained unclear until now. The military investigation revealed that the captives were being held in a tunnel complex from which the targeted Hamas commander operated. The military claims it was unaware of the hostages’ presence in the area at the time of the strike, citing information suggesting their location elsewhere.

This revelation has been met with criticism, with some accusing the Israeli military of intelligence failures and others expressing concern over the potential for further casualties among the remaining hostages. The admission could further fuel calls for negotiations with Hamas to secure the release of the remaining captives.

“There have been a series of significant intelligence and security failures throughout this war,” said Al Jazeera correspondent Hamdah Salhut. “This latest admission is not being received well, with families of captives fearing this exact type of thing.”

The military’s conclusions, though confirming the likely cause of the captives’ deaths, still state that the “circumstances of their deaths cannot be definitely determined.” The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, remains focused on military pressure as a means to secure the release of the remaining captives, a strategy that has been criticized by opposition parties and analysts.

The war in Gaza erupted following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, which killed over 1,100 people. Since then, Israel’s military has launched extensive airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 41,206 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
