**Albufeira, Portugal:** A 29-year-old Irish man, identified as Ryan Chan from Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was found dead in a police cell in Albufeira, Algarve, on Wednesday morning. Chan had been arrested the previous night after allegedly attacking his partner, also in her 20s, with a knife.
The couple had traveled to Albufeira for a social event earlier this week. Chan’s partner sustained injuries in the attack but was treated at a local hospital and has since been discharged.
Emergency services were called to the police station upon the discovery of Chan’s body, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Portuguese authorities have confirmed that there was no third-party involvement in Chan’s death, and investigations are ongoing. The Judiciary Police, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Inspection-General of Internal Administration (IGAI) are all involved in the investigation.
The National Guard, in a statement, confirmed that Chan had been detained following the attack on his partner. The circumstances surrounding his death in the cell are being investigated, and the Guard is working with other agencies on the case.
Gardaí in Ireland are liaising with Portuguese authorities and the families involved.
