Sun Sep 15 02:15:13 UTC 2024: ## Iran’s Brutal Crackdown Two Years After Amini Protests: No Justice, Growing Repression

Two years after Mahsa Amini’s death sparked widespread protests in Iran, the country’s clerical authorities have crushed the movement with a brutal crackdown that has left a trail of death, imprisonment, and fear. Despite international condemnation, the Iranian government continues to repress its people with impunity.

Amnesty International reports that security forces used live ammunition against protesters, resulting in the deaths of at least 551 individuals. Thousands more have been arrested, with 10 men executed for their alleged involvement in the protests. The government has also targeted the families of victims, arresting and harassing relatives of those killed or imprisoned.

The crackdown extends beyond the protests, with a renewed emphasis on enforcing the mandatory hijab. Women are facing increased surveillance and harassment, with the government using facial recognition technology to target those not complying with the dress code.

While international organizations, including the UN, have condemned the Iranian government’s actions, no officials have been held accountable for the crimes against humanity committed during the crackdown. The Iranian regime appears to be doubling down on its repressive policies, further solidifying its grip on power.

Despite the brutal repression, observers believe that Iranian society has been irrevocably altered by the Amini protests. Many young women remain defiant, and deep divisions within the opposition have come to light.

“The protest movement shook the Iranian regime to the core,” said Arash Azizi, a visiting fellow at Boston University. “But it also showed the absolute bankruptcy of the opposition alternatives to the regime. I still believe Iran is not going back to pre-2022, and within the next few years, the Islamic Republic will likely see some fundamental shifts.”

The Amini protests exposed the deep-seated frustration and disillusionment among Iranians with the current regime, but the future remains uncertain as the country grapples with the consequences of the government’s brutal response.
